Meet our speakers
Joe is a pastor at Cities Church and leads The Community Group in the Howe neighborhood. He is a professor at Bethlehem College and Seminary, where he teaches: Bible, theology, philosophy, and history to undergraduate students. Both Joe and his wife Jenny are graduates of Texas A&M, and Joe went on to get an MA from New Saint Andrews College. They now live with their two boys in Minneapolis.
Dr. Phil Gelatt
Director, High School Program, Ron Blue Institute for Financial Planning
Dr. Phil Gelatt is the Director of the High School Program for the Ron Blue Institute. In this position he seeks to build relationships with high school educators and provide leadership and direction for the future of the program. The HSP presently serves Christian schools in 20 states and two foreign countries, offering courses designed to assist high school students in discovering biblical wisdom in financial decision-making, the pursuit of their God-given calling and purpose, and stewarding their influence through service to others. Additionally, Phil is an adjunct faculty in Leadership studies.
Phil brings much Christian education experience to his role, spending twenty-nine years serving in Christian school ministry. His experience in education ranges from that of a teacher, coach, director, principal, and head of school. Along with his professional role in education, Phil has volunteered his time to the education of others in many other ways. He serves on the Board of The Nehemiah Group Outreach Society, a mission initiative that seeks to partner Christian schools in the U.S. with Christian schools in developing countries. Phil has also led numerous mission trips to Central and South America. Stemming from his love of the outdoors, he has also facilitated many wilderness camping trips for teenagers and adults in order to foster spiritual growth and leadership development in these individuals.
Phil holds a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University, as well as a Master of Arts in Christian School Administration from Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana (1988). He received his bachelor’s degree at Baptist Bible College in Religious Education (1979).
Phil lives in the Indianapolis area with his wife, Carol Elise. They have three adult children; Krista, Michael, and Eric. They are also GG and Papa to Haddon, Piper, Harper, Ellisyn, Ezekiel, and Owen.

Dr. Ben Merkle
President of New Saint Andrews College
Fellow of Theology Dr. Ben Merkle is the College’s second President, having previously served as a Dean. He holds a D.Phil. in Oriental Studies and an M.St. in Jewish Studies from Oxford University, England. His Masters degree in English Literature and B.S. in Education (Secondary Education-Chemistry, with a minor in History) were both from the University of Idaho. He also studied theology at Greyfriars Hall from 1998 to 2000.
Dr. Merkle served as a Lecturer at New Saint Andrews from 2000 until 2005, when he was promoted to Fellow of Theology. He has taught the freshman introductory theology course, Lordship Colloquium, and Hebrew. He has also team-taught Anglo-Saxon. Dr. Merkle was promoted to the office of President in 2015.
He has served Christ Church in Moscow both as a part-time campus minister with Collegiate Reformed Fellowship, a campus ministry of Christ Church, and as its Executive Minister.
Dr. Merkle is the author of The White Horse King: The Life of Alfred the Great (Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2009) and Defending the Trinity in the Reformed Palatinate: The Elohistae (Oxford University Press 2015). He is a contributing editor and former managing editor of the periodical Credenda/Agenda.
He and wife Bekah (B.A., 1998), the first graduate of New Saint Andrews, have five children.
Associate Pastor at Christ Church
Toby Sumpter (M.A.T.S., Erskine Theological Seminary) was ordained in 2007, and currently serves as an Associate Pastor at Christ Church in Moscow. An author, he also hosts CrossPolitic, a popular online show and podcast. He completed his undergraduate studies at New Saint Andrews College and pursued ministerial studies at Greyfriars Hall. In addition to his pastoral duties, he serves as adjunct faculty at New Saint Andrew’s College. Toby and his wife Jenny have four children.
Matt Walsh is a writer and speaker who is considered one of the religious Right’s most influential young voices. His book, "The Unholy Trinity," about the left's assault on life, marriage, and gender, is now available for sale.
Matt got his start in local talk radio before launching his website, The Matt Walsh Blog, which soon attracted millions of readers a month. He joined TheBlaze in October of 2014, and has been its leading columnist ever since.
Matt lives in Maryland with his wife and three kids.
Douglas Wilson is the minister of Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho, which is a member of the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches (CREC). After his stint in the US Navy as a submariner, he earned an MA in Philosophy at the University of Idaho.
As one of the founders of Logos School, a Classical and Christian school (K-12), he has served on its Board since its inception. He is also a Senior Fellow of Theology at New Saint Andrews College, and the author of numerous books, including: Reforming Marriage, The Case for Classical Christian Education, Letter from a Christian Citizen, and Blackthorn Winter. He is also the general editor for the Omnibus textbook series.
All his favorite authors begin their names with initials--C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, H.L. Mencken, J.R.R. Tolkien, N.D. Wilson, and P.G. Wodehouse. The one exception is Nancy Wilson, a favorite author to whom he has been married for over thirty-four years. They have three children and fifteen grandchildren.
